Manhattan, KS Regional Airport History

Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK), located in Kansas, was created in 1939 when its construction began with temporary grass runways. Dedicated in November 1940, it saw the establishment of its first terminal, the “Manhattan Municipal Airport” terminal, in 1953. The facility became a hub for Continental Airlines DC-3 flights in the same month. Numerous airlines have been operating from this airport since the 1950s. In 1979, to facilitate the new Boeing 737 service by Frontier Airlines, significant enhancements were made, extending the southwest end of runway 3-21 by 1,500 ft, and widening the entire runway by 50 ft. The runway includes 13 inches of concrete from 1963, with additional layers added in 1979 at the southwest end and widened regions. In 2015 and 2016, the current airline terminal was opened in two phases, replacing the one from 1997. This $18 million project increased the terminal’s capacity, offering three jet bridge parking positions from two gates, accommodating larger aircraft like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320. The terminal upgrade also improved its services with expanded space for ticketing, baggage claim, car rental, and security screening.
