Society of Women Engineers

Written by Hannah Fowler

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a prestigious and influential organization with a storied history dating back to 1950. Established with the mission to empower women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, to demonstrate the value of diversity and inclusion, and to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving quality of life, SWE has grown into a global advocacy body for women in the engineering field. The organization provides a comprehensive platform for training, support, and advocacy to help women engineers overcome barriers in the industry.

Integral to its mission, SWE administers a variety of scholarship programs aimed at supporting women pursuing engineering degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels. While SWE's scholarships are primarily targeted towards engineering and technology, the broad and interdisciplinary nature of modern engineering education means that students interested in aviation and aerospace fields can also benefit. These scholarships are designed to encourage women to pursue their interests in engineering and related fields, including aviation—a sector where women have been historically underrepresented. By providing financial assistance, mentorship opportunities, and a supportive community, SWE endeavors to increase the representation of women in engineering and aviation, thereby promoting diversity, innovation, and excellence in these critical fields. Through its scholarship program and other initiatives, SWE is committed to breaking down barriers and fostering an environment where women in aviation and aerospace engineering can thrive and lead.
